From the moment we are arrived on the coach, Year 5 were amazed at the sight of Ufton Court’s Tudor Manor. Our first afternoon was spent learning about the building and the family tree. We had a tour around the site and they discovered many new facts about the lives of the Tudors. In the evening, the children enthusiastically participated in a historical Tudor banquet.
The children got stuck in their character roles, whilst in authentic Tudor costumes. We ate, sang, played games and danced. It was a spectacular evening full of laughter, compassion, and even some insults! It was great to see the enjoyment on all of their faces.
Our second day was also full of lots of exciting learning activities! We began our morning by splitting into two groups. One group set off to the woods for archery, which was fun! The other group took part in an artefact investigation and found out a lot about the items in a Tudor house.
After lunch, we met in the hall for a crime and punishment drama session. We role-played crimes for the high and petty courts and the jury had to make some very important decisions!
Not long after, the children went through a series of activities that were typical life and survival skills for those in the Tudor times. These included: fire lighting, fence making through weaving, and making thread.
After a lovely dinner, the children set out to the garden lawn to play some Tudor games. Of course, football was a strong favourite! But they also really enjoyed creating some of their games.
As the children woke for the final morning, the sun decided to join us! We spent the morning outside until it was time for the Tudor raid. Key actors were selected to recreate a famous raid that took place at Ufton Court when it was owned by Francis Perkins. The other children raided the house with their weapons to find suspicious items and prove that they were guilty! The children loved stepping into their characters and it helped them have a strong feel for how life was like in this time.
After a quick lunch, the children set off back home! We had an fantastic time learning that was filled with joy and laughter. The children had such a great time!
